The thing is that Tony had known about this for some time before he took action. Sonny knew for a fact that as long as he was black and flamboyantly "gay", he had a job for life with the company. Eventually though he started to let it slip that it was all just a gimmick. When Tony caught wind of this it was all over for Sonny's career. He waited and bided his time until the perfect opportunity arose to fire Sonny. And then, just a few hours before he had planned to release CM Punk from his contract, he let Sonny Kiss go as well. It was a smart move because everyone was so caught up in the Punk drama that they barely even realised Sonny was dropped too.
