The term indie has evolved. Indies use to be where you would go to watch fake Doinks and fake Undertakers and fake Ultimate Warriors.
Promotions that you could actually watch without being there live weren't really called indies until the 2000s. Even CZW wasn't really called an indie until the early 2000s.
That said if ECW was around today I think they would be called an indie. They didn't really have binding contracts and while they had TV, it had limited reach and was really just clips from their home videos which were the internet PPVs at the time.

I guess RVD would have won, he was so protected, even the impact players who were their top heels weren't allowed to get any offense on him at heatwave 99.
If wokeness can do anything for wrestling fans it's finally reckoning with the fact that Heyman demanding an intentionally violent style while knowing he wasn't going to pay anyone is way more fucked up and evil than Mike Awesome going to WCW.
