I don't think he was injured, but I also don't believe he's ready for a full time schedule. I also know Punk's smart enough to know that and anyone telling themselves different is a fool. Everything Gunther and McIntyre laid into him looked extra heavy, and again I'm willing to bet money that was by request of Punk. He's trying to get back in ring-shape through the beating and hitting, that's the mentality and idea of training to boxers, fighters, even when playing football. Say what we will about his record in the MMA but Punk considers himself this sort of man and still lives it today.
But will he be ready? I dunno. I think a limited schedule is a better route. But as much as he emulates Piper I don't see him wanting the Piper comparisons as his legacy. Then again, it'd keep him healthier longer. I've always thought he'd be best as a coach for younger talents, even in AEW.
Punk had something interesting to say in the pre show segment with Peter Rosenberg. Punk remarked to not wanting to come off as "cheesy" when he said he was just happy to be there, giving hint he hears the critiques of his run so far. This is classic Punk. Even the line he yelled over to commentary about doing the Pedigree in the Royal Rumble. He speaks to the audience through the media, like a coach would. He knows what areas he needs to address, on himself, and how he comes across. He's very aware.
So... I expect a long run, a true build from Punk to wherever he goes in the WWE. Honestly it would've been disappointing had Punk won the Royal Rumble and finished his story at WM. It would've been all too soon. I bet TKO and the upper management would've liked that, the same type at TNT that see dollar signs in Punk, but everything is seen shows me even Punk wants the long road and slow build because next year's WrestleMania is his and Seth's proper.
