Cody used his resources and time in AEW to try and present himself as the company's Cena despite the fact that the fans, EVPs and Tony himself never really saw him that way, only as a good supporting character similar to Knuckles in the Sonic games. So he would be in the midcard, but doing bizarre main event style angles and finishes. This tension between these two realities created the Codyverse and when fans realized what he was doing, they tried to get him to stop, or at least turn heel and be re-integrated back into the rest of the show's universe, which led him to double down on it harder which created an awkward stand off between him and the fans leading to his departure. I doubt that was the sole reason he left though. He's always been an E-nigga at heart. I'll always miss his cringekino segments though, they were definitely an interesting part of the show.
