I thought it was based on Danhausen. That Howdy was the demon that used to be in Bray and turned him into the Fiend but Bray got him out and that's why he was acting all normal when he first came back. And Howdy kept trying to get Bray to take him back so that's why he was anti-Howdy at first but then joined up with him at the Pitch Black Match and that's why Bray put that other mask on because it was supposed to show Howdy's influence was taking over and Bray would eventually give in fully and start wearing that new Fiend costume he had made.
