Rikidozan was basically your proto Eddie Kingston, in a way, though his training heritage was legitimate enough but the point remains in that he was bringing over what was basically a foreign tribute act -- and he got it over in Japan to the point where it lasted long enough to acquire its own identity.
But think about AJPW, how tied it was to the NWA -- its titles used the NWA and Amercian wrestling for their provenance.
Really if you think about it, Tanahashi doing a Texas Cloverleaf isn't very different from what Eddie Kingston is doing.
