Just guessing but here is what I think happened.
>Start off in AEW as a hardcore spot guy
>Cody takes interest and wants to "make" him after highly acclaimed Moxley matches
>Has a slowburn build towards TNT title
>Gets Sting as a manager because Tony sees something in Darby and Sting needs to be on TV weekly
>Starts getting over as fuck
>Has great matches as soon as fans come back as pandemic slows down
>Despite losing TNT title to Miro, still gets super over in feud with Ethan Page
>CM Punk calls him out for his return match
>Does the job to punk in an attempted Bret vs 123 kid recreation
>Afterwards placed in a direction less feud with Andrade
>Used to put over MJF at revolution
>Used to get babyface Sammy Guevara over
>Used to get the Hardy's over
>Jobbed out to Jeff in a tournament he should have in the finals of
>Used to get undisputed elite over because they need something at the moment
Basically Darby got the "he can loose, he'll still be over" stamp from Tony and he's using him to put over as many guys as he can with big contracts. A victim of circumstance essentially. He will probably be built up to lose to Punk in his reign. Shame.
