Edge probably has a lot of pent up bitterness and regret over all those years he missed out on because of his neck. He's well past his prime but he still wants to be The Guy, just like Hogan and plenty of other "Legends" who came before him.
IMO the stupid cinematic car ride, followed by the long walk to the ring for a run in spot to save Darby and Sting from have their brains splattered all over the ring prove it. That was a great match that was way better than it had any right to be going in, but they pulled it off, and then the entire thing was sacrificed during the finish so Edge could "have his moment" in the most grandiose self-mark way possible.
And of course Tony played right along with it because he's also a self-mark and was so pleased with his "end of an era, start of a new era" hype. "Lookie lookie Edge! The dirt sheets think i'm gonna buy NJPW, what a heckin rib right?! THIS IS SO MUCH FUN! XD"
