Listen up marks and smarks and farts.
Pro Wrestling started as a conjob and still is, was founded on pure monetary gain, and there was zero merit in what they were doing. They took poor retarded fucks money and scammed them thinking they were seeing a legit fight and moved to the next town with the carnival to avoid any backlash of the marks getting wise to their con. Hence the the term carny. They also protected the con with their life mafia style.
Now we transition to modern day where everybody knows it's fake so pro wrestling leans heavily on the performance and storytelling to carve out a wedge in the entertainment industry.
Now what exactly is the exact "art" wrestling is selling itself on? In ring performance or soap opera storylines? Which one is really the one's people claiming that's art?
Neither, nobody can agree and the wrestling fanbase is split on what exactly is "art". How do you determine a wrestling company's value then if not art?
So the next logical step is simple, money. I mean it's what wrestling was founded on and what it's always been about. So it makes sense to make that the defacto litmus test of how well a promotion is doing, no arbitrariness, just cold hard numbers.
So tl:dr Wrasslin has always been about money and the art shit just came later because wrestling HAD to transition to a more entertainment based product in the world where kayfabe is dead to survive.
It's why Vince was a huge success because he could see the writing on the wall an invented his sports entertainment version of wrestling.
