Personally I usually just let my hand start moving until whatever comes out makes sense - often cannot execute what I see in my head or what's in front of me, but absolutely struggle drawing realistic faces, I am more comfortable with the rest of the human anatomy though. I remember the girl I painted with in college was the first person I saw use impasto, she did a neat painting of flowers where the petals popped off the canvas.
I really admire fresco too, I saw a painting at some church in Savannah as a kid and the peoples veins looked 3D, the transparency effects changed me. I may start importing some paper drawings and coloring them digitally to get comfortable with color again, and the software
