The rise of "nerd culture" has made general audiences think that references and easter eggs that are of no service to the story being told are somehow a sign of quality. Look at the capeshit/Star Wars crowd. They go fucking ballistic about how "disappointing" a movie or series is if it doesn't have a cameo or a reference to a fucking cartoon or whatever.
That mindset has made its way into wrestling because it's the same fanbases, or at least the same low intelligence/uncultured archetype. MJF quoting Steiner math verbatim was somehow considered good because "I RECOGNIZE THAT HOLY FLIPPIN AMAZEBALLS"
