They saw the negativity Jey was getting and decided to incorporate that into the angle (Jey was already self-conscious in previous RAWs, they're just accentuating it more, now). They're trying to get people on Jey's side by getting him to admit he's fucking up and not #1 contender material. Smart idea, but it falls on Jey to actually put the work in to be better for everyone to accept him.
