>>5598078Dragon Ball was always changing. The Cell saga villains were supposed to be Androids 19 and 20. Editors didn't like that a fat chinese man and an old fuck were the villains, so they wanted him to add younger villains, which he did with 17 and 18.
But the editor didn't want two young and pretty idiots to be the villains, so they added Cell.
Then the editor didn't want Cell to be an ugly bug, so he told Toriyama to change the design. And then the editor didn't like Cell being a black man, so they told him to change the monster again. They finally settled down with Perfect cell and finished the story from there.
I don't know how Toriyama managed to make a coherent story on the fly, but is a testament to his talent.
