As an athlete and a pro fighter, Dr Death was over the hill. He also had zero pro fighting experience, obviously. To do a shoot at that point in his career was part hubris, part being forced into it to protect his reputation because of Russo's retarded booking. Either way, it was an all around horrible idea.
It's a shame though because Dr Death was legitimately one of the most gifted in-ring pro wrestlers ever. Guy could do crazy shit and make it look effortless (look at his balance in this webm, he stands more comfortably on the top rope than a luchador) and had a great sense of timing, psychology, etc.
Why JR thought Williams' mastery of the AJPW style would make him a great main event opponent in the fucking ATTITUDE ERA WWF is a mystery to me though, kek. It wasn't like he was going to have a 30 minute broadway with Austin who was in his brawling phase at this point in his career. It wasn't like Dr Death was going to be having memorable promo battles with him.
I guess there WAS a readymade angle if Dr Death came in as JR's guy, and JR sort of "went heel" and turned on Austin to mouthpiece the new guy but eh, Dr Death kind of seems like a square peg to the WWF's round hole.
Guy should absolutely be remembered as an all-time great though, he was awesome
