>>12755805I grew up way out in the country and the only time I could watch wrestling was when my parents would drive me into town to stay at my grandparents and I could watch PNW on broadcast TV back in the 80s. Almost all of my knowledge of wrestling from that period came from my older cousin sending me his old wrestling magazine when he went to college. I had boxes of basically a decade worth of wrestling mags from the mid 70s to the mid 80s I would obsessively read in chronological order.
When cable finally came out into the country in the early 90s it blew my mind seeing Bob Backlund in the New Generations WWF and seeing how different he was from the guy I had grown up reading about. In retrospect and having actually seen the matches I grew up reading about the guy is an amazing worker, but the backlash from childhood me and teenage me trying to come to grips with the wild disconnect from what I "knew" and what I saw was wild.
Bob Backlund is incredibly based and I appreciate him even more now as an old man than I did when I was seven or eight years old reading his uber babyface quotes in second hand magazines.
