Vince and Hunter were smart enough to ser through Cody's ruse. It's been so obvious from the beginning that this was part of his and Tony's plan for him to "jump ship" to WWE, win the big one and then leave back to AEW with the momentum, bragging rights, and buzz of Rhodes' return as the conquering hero who could be portrayed as besting everyone the fed had to offer, most notably their top draw Roman.
They didn't count on Hunter and Vince seeing through the obvious charade and they lured Rhodes in with the full intention of humiliating him.
