It was all nonsense but through the power of good storytelling people could suspend their disbelief and accept the nonsense as "real" and get invested in it. Running the ropes and hulking up were the same way. People accepted that shit as "real" because the characters and storytelling in pro wrestling were so solid in the 80's, late 90's, and even early 2000's that they could suspend their disbelief. But suspension of disbelief is impossible with something like AEW because the storytelling sucks and it's all so flagrantly phony(to the point that it constantly breaks the 4th wall and intentionally reminds you it's phony). AEW is just cooperative gymnastics and that's what AEW fans actually like about it. They don't want to see wrestling. They just want to see a really, really shitty version of Cirque du Soleil.
