I feel like the prudes in the late 90s and early 00s figured out that arguing for censorship from the position of conservative and christian values was a losing battle because the two said positions had lost much of their influence on society. So they switched tactics, and now argue for censorship from the position of "progressive" and social justice values. And this works a lot better because lefties control all the institutions and society has replaced traditional religion with a secular woke religion.
