Austin getting the stinger at SS97 was the worst timing possible, as his trajectory was going skyward toward main event status at that point. They salvaged it as best they could by having him cut promos every week and get himself over, but he was never the same again. Couldn't really work the same again and relied on his gimmick more which thankfully worked.
