I think this was proof that Cena turning heel just never would have worked and its a good thing that WWE never listened to the smarks for the last 2 decades. I'm sure Cena tried very hard to pull it off. He drew massive heat early on during the heel run, but it fizzled out after Dwayne decided to pull out from the story.
