Long post ahead: One thing I have noticed about joshi fans on Twitter is that whenever the AEW or WWE women’s division has a bad match/segment, many of them bring up promotions like Stardom and talk about how much better the booking and wrestlers are. I personally believe that Stardom has the best women’s wrestling in the world, but is it fair to use them as a standard for Western women’s wrestling? In my opinion there are certain advantages that Stardom has that I don’t think AEW or WWE can give their women:
The intense training: people involved in the joshi scene can probably give more insight than me but from what I’ve seen the joshi training system seems to be way more intense than the training provided to women in the states. In Japan, you see a lot of women start training very young. In Stardom, there are/were several wrestlers who aren’t even out of high school that are better workers than a good chunk of the American scene. I’ve also seen wrestlers who have limited in-ring experience become great workers very soon into their careers (Utami Hayashishita and Saya Kamitani come to mind.)
Being a women’s only promotion: Fans including myself have complained about how little time women get in AEW and WWE get. Stardom does not have this problem because the entire promotion is women. This is why I personally loved Shimmer so much. It was a promotion that featured women from all around the world and focused only on them.
