The Comics Journal had the same sort of setup Dave does with WON and massively overrated certain styles of art and writing and always pushed people associated with their publishing house (Fantagraphics). Every normie used to know what Siskel and Ebert rated a movie and most of the people who weren’t alive for their reviews know what Two Thumbs Down means.
I don’t like most of Dave’s opinions, I’ve never given him a shekel, even when I was reading the early websites and newsgroups I was never really into him. I don’t give a fuck about his Jewish stars but the guy is a singular voice and he is what passes for an expert. Zoomers will never be able to comprehend a world where people possessed expertise in something and that is what qualified them to share their opinion and why people listened or read. It wasn’t a shouting match where everyone thinks they are entitled to be heard or milquetoast pop culture “journos” who rate everything 8/10 aka IGN.
