Plenty of guys would have made good money on the indies, and it has always been true that a high-level indy guy could make more than a low-level WWE/development guy, but the indies are also far less secure in that that income can diminish quickly. If your status on the scene quickly diminishes, then so do merch sales, booking fees, numbers of dates, etc. It's not so volatile when you're making guaranteed money. And of course WWE is an investment in yourself, because if you break through to at least being a TV regular, you're making better money.
