The whole WWE World Title Situation right now could be like what happened with the Intercontinental and US Championships from Survivor Series 2001 to early Summer of 2003.
The Undisputed Universal Championship is a whole another issue however.

Does the new WHC carry on the pre 2013 legacy before they unified the two main belts? Not that it matters anyway. The universal title was basically the replacement for the old NWA/WCW WHC, this whole thing would have made more sense if they retired the universal title and had a new design for the WWE title.

OP here. Let's start from Survivor Series 2001.
>WCW's US Championship was unified with WWE's Intercontinental Championship, as part of ending the Invasion Storyline.
>No Mercy 2002, The IC title was unified with the World Heavyweight Championship.
>May 2003, despite the bitching of GM Eric Bischoff, RAW's other GM Steve Austin reactivated the IC Championship, retaining its lineage.
>June 2003, SmackDown GM Stephanie McMahon reactivated the US Championship, which like the IC Championship, retained its lineage from WCW's.
In short, both midcard titles were once deactivated due to title unification but was reactivated back and claimed lineage of its previous incarnations.
With how WWE promoted their new WHC, it seemed that they are about to claim the lineage of the 2002 WHC which was unified with the WWE Championship in December of 2013.

Some recent titles doesn't get reinstated the lineage. When WWE bring back Woman Champion it's a new lineage and not a continuation. Same with Cruiserweight belt

Thing is they probably wont bother announcing or even indicating these changes. There was still some logic left in the early 2000s.

OP here also, Here's my idea of why they can't truly unify the WWE and Universal Championships yet. For both championships to be truly unified, one must be deactivated much like what happened with US/IC titles and many other titles before (the NXT UK's series of championships are recent examples).
Deactivate the WWE Championship and there goes the years and years of history and Vince, still an executive of WWE, will not like that. Deactivate the Universal Championship however, and there goes Roman Reigns' 1000 days holding it, which is also promoted going into the upcoming Night of Champions.
Basically WWE is stuck in a dilemma about the world title situation. Maybe in NOC or beyond it, they will truly unify and retire the Universal Championship.

Eh I do have some nitpicks as well with the new title (Why did they left out the "Heavyweight" in the belt, for example) but I fairly like it nonetheless. Besides this is a world title that is not similarly like the 2014 design they would push down everyone's throats back then like the Universal Championship or the RAW/SD Women's Championships.
They designed it to be a mish-mash of WWE's older world title design/motifs with the World Heavyweight Championship as its template. So if you hate that big ass corporate logo in the middle of the belt, you can blame the 2005 Spinner Belt being alive for almost eight years and held by wrestlers besides John Cena.

I would agree to a reason of a what if scenario of a non-heavyweight wrestler winning the WHC like Rey Mysterio did in 2006, but when I thought of when Ricochet won the IC title, a.k.a. the current design with the word "Heavyweight" on it, I thought the WWE probably wouldn't mind to add the word onto the new WHC. But Nope.
