He was over as a Young Lion and clearly very talented at the time. Go look up his tag match at the dome.

Then he got even more popular with the stabbing shit.

There was a general malaise from things going to shit and Inoki leaving the company to die that was affecting New Japan, and neither Tanahashi nor Nakamura could fully fight against it no matter how hard they went. He definitely became more appreciated in the Okada era as the guy that held up the fractured world together so they could get to that point.

Tana got an offer from Muto to jump to AJPW when Muto was running things over there and instead Tana chose to stay with NJPW no matter what. Glad the guy can enjoy the fruit of his labors these days.
