Never got the hate for this design. The Hoplite symbolism is great, in a hoplite all have to work together. The only problem was it being bronze/silver, made it look un-prestigious. Gold makes it great.

Looking at it now with the old belt, this really just looks like an updated version. Overall design is basically the same, I never really noticed.
Weird, since pic-rel are the same title lineage as OP. These always felt similar in design to the WWE Undisputed belt.

You're just noticing this now? Anyways, it's probably because they decided at the last minute to change which titles became the Smackdown titles. Most likely because it would be unbalanced as Smackdown already had the WWF title, Raw only had the IC title and they wanted to keep it more balanced between new and old titles. Further supporting this, the WWE Tag titles became the World Tag titles and the new titles made for Smackdown got the original tag title name - the WWE Tag Team Championship, also matching the design.
