Truth is there's no problem with small flippy guys on principle. There are no bad styles of wrestling, just bad wrestlers. Today's lame superman-posing Ospreay and Ricochet clones are yesterday's ECW wannabes. You just have to be cool or at least interesting in some way.

Plus he was an actual gymnast
As a result, he had solid fundamentals and a working knowledge of how to use his skills in a "shoot"

All of AJ's flippy shit is: impressive counters, flying strikes and over the top HBK selling.
But there's no obvious cooperation between twinks with no conditioning or stamina.

RVD and Sabu were the same
Mysterio and the WCW luchadores/cruiserweights were the same.
That generation was just trained better and got to work with better veterans, they knew how to actually lock in a hold and throw a punch

I mention the WWE thing because of how Brock Lesnar treated his IWGP belt run and came across as disrespectful or whatever. so they didn't want to put the strap on another gaijin until AJ, who they might have seen as a more steady player willing to do business.

AJ was always one of the representatives for TNA during their partnership with NJPW. He worked good stuff with Tanahashi back in the 2000s so when he left TNA, he already had their trust
