wm17 killed austin's mystique. he was bigger than hogan between wm14 and wm17. wm17 was the night that he went from GOAT to GREAT. if wm17 went a different way and mcmahon never came out that night, austin would've blown the roof off 18 and they wouldn't have gone red and yellow. it would've been heel hogan. the rock was always #2 and a solid foil to austin. that's why hulk went over.

austin was never going to get booed. at worst he would be cheered less than hogan. nobody would ever boo stone cold because they liked him too much, whereas the rock was kind of a fag so they didnt mind booing him

They'd cheer both but prefer Hogan. Especially as the big story of the match would be him going back to his roots and doing the fan favourite spots. I do think Austin turned it down because he knew the reception would be in Hogan's court and didn't want to risk his brand.

Rock already left for hollywood once, and they knew he was leaving again. Plus his character was very saturated at this point. Austin was more beloved and people knew he wasnt leaving for hollywood.
