I can't believe Paul put over Benoit. This was during his run of burying all the WCW guys. Was Benoit in WWF/E long enough to get over the stigma, because that certainly didn't apply to Jericho.

Cunter was willing to do jobs he just wasn't willing to give up his spot
So even when Benoit was champ the entire show revolved around HHH, and when Benoit dropped the title he went back in the mid card while HHH stayed on top

It was a WWE match, and this was the era in which Meltzer never gave WWE matches five stars. In fact, he rarely gave anything 5 stars, probably due to the lack of relevance of Japanese wrestling.

Benoit also dropped the title to one of Triple H's boys in Orton, and for the next 9 months the main event storyline was Triple H and the dissolution of Evolution, first with Orton and then Batista. Benoit was a vehicle for end of Evolution storyline.

Why was Paul even in the mania match? Fans wanted Shawn to win at rumble then out over Benoit in an actual good wrestling match. Paul’s flair larp absolutely fucked the main event scene for years
