The moral of the story is that if you give people a reason not to like you, they will be happy to see you go down, and celebrate anyone who does it.
Therefore, it is in large part Gunther's fault. He's not generating enough heat to where he gets the crowd behind any guy he's facing. Yes, those contenders could be charisma vacuums incapable of getting over, but it's still up to Gunther to carry as best he can, getting them over by being hated enough, you see.
