Wrestling being obviously fake in storylines makes us seek out the behind-the-scenes news because it's often much more authentic, realistic, or dramatic. We get to see assholes behaving badly, and have it be an extension of high school cafeteria drama that we can watch at a distance.
This focus on behind-the-scenes turned into console warring about ratings, which has nothing to do with the actual wrestling. When an angle hits hot, notice how people can mostly acknowledge that it's a good match, program, whatever.
