Anyway, AJ got himself over by doing the pitbull trash gimmick Vince wanted without complaint and then the Steve Austin show on the network and talking about his childhood, which was pretty much Vince's origin story.

I have a hard time believing that Vince was slow in realizing that AJ kicks ass. I also have a hard time believing that Vince had no idea about AJ's bonafides. JBL said on commentary that AJ won the same championship as Brock Lesnar while he was walking down the ramp during his debut. He was put over immediately as a big deal.
