It's economically inefficient to run buildings that you will sell out, it means potential fans won't be able to get seats, you always want to have some extra space which means there will always be empty seats usually on hardcam or up in the nosebleeds

Theres only supposed to be a small area left open around the cameras, not the entire fucking arena up into the bleachers. Thats why you do see a few people sprinkled close to the camera.

If they wanted to "sell out" they would just run a 5k building and pack everyone in and have no empty hardcam side and that would mean the extra few thousand fans who would want to see them can't buy a ticket and they'd make less money.

In theory this makes sense, but it isn't that simple. Having a really hot ticket, and a portion of the fanbase who can't go, can actually be beneficial for keeping demand high the next time you're in town. WWE learned in the 90s that if your tickets are cheap and easily available, people view your product as cheap and second rate. AEW booking a huge arena and then only filling two thirds of it despite multibuy deals and heavy papering isn't 'economically efficient'. It just teaches fans in that area that they never need to pay full price for an AEW ticket, meaning demand will be even lower next time they're there.

If you're doing 4 for $40 ticket giveaways in the week of the show, then there's clearly very little demand for your tickets and the show definitely isn't an economic success. Then, next time you're in Vegas, what happens? Fans know that buying a full price ticket is a waste of money, because you've booked an arena that's too big again, so will inevitably be discounting a few weeks before the show. So they wait. Many people forget, or make other plans in the meantime, so you have to discount even harder to get people through the door. It's a vicious cycle.

What? No. MITB London is a great current example. Sold out in a minute, probably could have sold three times the number of tickets. But, the tickets were expensive, so the gate will still be high, and they've kept demand high for the next time the company is in London. People won't want to miss out for a second time. It's a pretty simple but effective concept.

This is only true if you're paying over the odds for the venue, or have enough surplus demand that even without filling a bigger venue you sell enough extra to outweigh the higher venue costs. Which is going to still need 95% or so capacity unless you've been given the venue for insanely cheap.
Whole blocks mostly empty suggests you're falling short of that threshold to offset the higher costs and would be better off having surplus demand at a smaller venue.

It takes resources to build venues. Even in large cities, there's only so many options and a building that sells out might be the closest to the maximum demand. If an MLW can sell out a 500 seat place, then yeah maybe they could have sold 700 tickets, but the next biggest option might be 5,000 and would be too expensive.
