WWE never needed a brand split in the first place because they're always cycling between the same 6 or so top men or women in the company regardless of who's on Raw or SmackDown. But since the brands are currently split right now, it would be nice if they actually tried to make the shows different from each other. The closest they got in the modern era was 2016 where SmackDown legitimately felt like a different show, where guys like Rhyno, Heath, Ziggler, Miz etc. actually got booking and attention they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. The lack of adherence to the split also makes matches where they are supposed to crossover like MitB, Survivor Series etc. feel less novel.
