The official Reddit app is shit so people use third party apps. Reddit is making it so that developers of those apps are charged every time someone uses their app to connect to Reddit. This means that the developers of those apps would likely have to either charge users to recoup costs or more likely discontinue the apps because they can't afford to run them. To be fair it is patently dumb and gay but the mods doing a sitewide blackout "protest" is also dumb and gay and won't change anything.

Most likely better and more efficient data collection from the official app. All major normosphere sites/social media are basically data collection fronts. The social media aspect just exists as a way to allow the companies that run them to collect user data and sell it to advertisers or whoever wants it.
