Smarks are in the ring. The self-serious ones have had it drilled it in their heads that cartoony, larger than life gimmicks, and even just having a personality that isn't "wrestler" means you aren't one.
The other smark class are geeks who grew up as outcasts who don't have the charisma, the acting skill, whatever, to pull off being anyone but themselves. "Yourself turned up to 11" only works when you're already a chad. The audience who eats this up are also losers who want to identify with who they're watching.
