I would make Nitro a TV-14 show. It's the only way I'd be able to compete and even beat Raw. PG wrestling at the time wasn't viable because WWE and ECW kept pushing the bar.

WCW had the most beautiful women in the business at the time and I would take full advantage of that. Torrie Wilson would be the nearly naked on every single episode. Daffney would be nearly naked. Stacy Kiebler would be nearly naked. Nitro Girls would do their shows nearly naked. I would just show off as much tits and ass as I possibly could for the ratings pop.

It all traces back to the nWo angle and how Bischoff failed to develop it and give it either a satisfying conclusion earlier or more twists and turns to keep it going. Bischoff also focused too much on the nWo angle while neglecting the rest of the roster. While freedom to the workers, despite tile limitations, did still allow some good stories and angles, they were overshadowed by nWo. Everything had to be about the nWo and it got obnoxious. WCW failed to build effective babyfaces and maintain them. Sting flopped at his coronation (Starrcade 97), Luger got his legs cut out from under him when he was super hot in summer of 97 when he won the title only to lose it in a few days, and even Goldberg's star faded after Nash ended the streak (Starrcade 98). I'd argue only DDP was ever built up to ME level as a lasting babyface, but they waited too long to pull the trigger on him.

All the above said, had Bret Hart cared, and had Bischoff tried, he could have been the answer. Although he had been a top heel in 97, the Montreal Screwjob turned him face. Bret even hinted when first came to WCW that he was there to dismantle the nWo. Bret was a great babyface who could work believably even at his age and could have put a lot of guys over if they kept him strong enough and relevant enough to do so. Bischoff didn't seem to care and just tossed him with Hogan in the nWo Hollywood. Bret likewise seemed to have mostly given up after WWF too, so it's not all Bischoff's fault. But I find it hard to believe that even a Bret with low motivation couldn't have been a key player in the Monday Night Wars had Bischoff and his team actually bothered to try.

The loss of Jericho was hurt them but they still had a solid show. Nash and the guys were still around. It was actually based because there was so much drama behind the scenes that it spilled over onto TV which was exciting.

Booker T, Eddie, Benoit, Owen, Malenko, Jericho, Scott Steiner and Raven all get pushed around '98. Bagwell, Normal Smiley, Rey, Konnan, Kidman, Meng and Glacier can alternate in the midcard. The wolfpac isn't associated with the nWo, but it still comes into fruition. Raven's Flock can become a faction too. The nWo will be the dying faction as the Flock, Wolfpac and WCW all trample it trying to get over on each other. Bring the nWo back in 2000.

If Thunder HAS to happen, put all the Luchadors there with some of the above talent and use Thunder to push guys from the power plant and then put the guys who are over in Nitro. Sometime in 2000 or so, make a Thunder vs. Nitro angle.

Jericho didn't have his heart in it. That doesn't count. He had WWE on the mind and wasn't gonna give WCW his best years.

AJ Styles didn't have the ego and international experience that Jericho had. He was just looking for opportunity. And AJ would have likely stayed loyal to WCW if they stayed in business.

Spoken like someone that didn't actually watch that Starrcade or the buildup to it. Sting didn't have a match for about a year and a half. He looked incredibly out-of-shape and high too during Starrcade up to and including completely dropping his Crow Sting gimmick at the end to shout "Mama Mia!" directly into the cam. These were the FIRST words Sting had spoken in over a year.

WCW did try to minimize just how big of a fuck up Sting was, and if you watch Nitro they never replayed any parts that put Sting in a bad light. But he was clearly NOT the guy and the Starrcade match proved it.

That was why WCW quickly moved away from Sting. He was still featured since he was still over, but he wasn't the focal point nor top babyface anymore.

Thank you. I was going off memory and mixed it up. Point remains that Sting was in piss poor shape, broke kayfabe, and embarrassed himself and WCW at Starrcade. And that was why WCW got the belt off of him and shifted direction. Sting was not the savior of WCW and he never was. Anyone watching JCP/NWA/WCW from back in the late 80s/early 90s remembers how hard Sting got pushed despite all of his flaws. They sacrificed so many guys to him. Sting always flopped as NWA or WCW champion. He couldn't hack it as the top guy. Sting looked like a million bucks, had lots of energy, and the face paint was huge back then. Crow gimmick was pure dimes. But the man himself, while by all accounts a nice man, was never meant for the spotlight. He really is similar to Ultimate Warrior in that way, obviously minus the outright insanity and asshole behavior.

It was toughman match, which were essentially boxing. It should have been a legitimate wrestling match. But I'm sure Russo didn't want that since he probably thinks wrestling is boring. But a shoot wrestling match would have had a low chance of injury and translate better (kayfabe) to pro wrestling rules.

The only time WCW was actually great top to bottom was like an 8 month period between Flair coming back and them signing Hogan.
So you have to either dump or never hire all the WWE guys.
But ultimately Time Warner wanted nothing to do with wrestling so you'd eventually have to find a buyer who can provide TV, or it's going to be sold to Vince even if WCW are winning.

Where did this bullshit narrative come from that Jericho was some huge fucking star in 1998? He was fresh out of the cruiserweight division and held the TV title, a belt worth shit. He was cutting some funny promos and getting good heat with his comedy schtick but he was still a few years off main-event status. The natural progression was to give him the US title by the end of 98 (or start of 99) and then by 99 - 2000 put him in contention of the world title.
Having him defeat Goldberg at Fall Brawl would have made Goldberg look like a total shmuck.

Have Sting go over Hogan. I don't care if he was fighting demons at the time. Forget the phony-ass "le screwjob" ending. Run one massive interference spot with the NWO being chased off by WCW faithful. Then steal the post match ending from WMXIX where Sting gains Hulk's respect, only for Hogan to be beaten down by Hall & Nash before Sting saves him. Then run a tag program with the two of the biggest babyfaces of all time against the Outsiders. It'll allow Hogan and Sting to split the load while you milk the dissolution of the NWO.

Keep Macho Man heel, and have him revive Macho Madness as a deranged, aging lunatic, in the same vein of Bob Backlund. He'll be the gatekeeper for younger talent.

Run Goldberg's push until the wheels fall off, at which point turn him. Eventually give the streak to Booker T. Really play up his past and give him a big underdog push. He's future champion material.

Give Steiner his solo push. Book him as a heel bully who bodies cruiserweights. Build to a program with Jericho. The promos alone should be dimes.

Book the Horsemen vs the Hart Foundation. That should let you milk a really good War Games and then a feud between Flair and the Hitman. Bret's at his best when he has personal animosity, and both should be willing to do business.

Have a firm hand at the top developing storylines with payoff. It was all political (Hogan, Nash). They really had all the tools. Talent, bank. Just before show no one knew what they were doing. They wouldn't have ended the Fed but they could've been competition for years to come. It was just chaos the last 3 years. They didn't have to go smut-tv and sell their souls like Vince did. This. Jericho was not ready. They put him, Benoit, and Eddie over in the WWF and the ratings started tanking soon after. The next guys coming up were not on Hogan, Nash (WCW), Sting, Flair, Savage's level. That's the true fact. And the ones who were the closest were already in OVW. WCW in 2000 needed Cena, Bautista, Lesnar, and Orton, and to have kept Austin and HHH. Along with Goldberg, that's the only way they would've won.
