Cody wouldn't be the same if he was in AEW. Making the jump made him a significantly bigger deal.

The most reliable version of the story is that Tony signed Punk to a massive contract. Cody wanted the same contract Punk had because he blew a ton of money on shit like a bus and a mansion. Tony didn't want to pay him that much, and the rest is history.

I've been to a sold out Cody show when he was touring local feds. The only other names on the card were Dijak and Keith Lee. It was only a few hundred people in a gymnasium/basketball court, but he was the draw

Cody wasn't drawing shit for AEW, they did some of their worst ratings with him featured. Their best ratings came in summer of 2021 when he was a peripherial figure or away for GoBigShow. Undoubtedly Cody was better backstage though, Punk is a fucking cancer.
