yeah i remember this and there was another series of big fails for punk surrounding it.

basically after vince told him to fuck off, he turned down an offer to join aew near the start of its television, and buried aew.

he claimed aew only communicated through text message and no one in aew agreed to meet him face-to-face, and this didn't make him feel important enough so he wasn't going to join. cody and several others said this was a lie and while they exchanged texts, there was also a face to face meeting arranged with "someone important". it was later reported that he had, in fact, met tony kahn face to face at that time.

his reason for lying was quickly revealed: while vince didn't want him in wwe, he managed to con fox into putting him on that fox-produced wwe backstage show, so him burying the competition made sense. he debut punk promising that "just when you thought you had all the answers i changed the culture". wwe backstage's ratings completely sucked. i recall it being mocked here and elsewhere since one of asuka's youtube video, where she showed off her new rice cooker, significantly outdrew it.

In fairness, this is just him defending his own character in kayfabe. Imagine getting hit with the world's weakest, gayest buckshot lariat and being forced to sell it for the 3 count. It didn't just make Phil look bad, it made Hangman look bad too. He would be burying himself, the the world title and the company if he outright said that Punk is a complete and total unathletic shitter who somehow managed to pin him and win the most prestigious championship in the promotion.

This is the funny thing about the beef between Phil and Hangman. Phil claims Hangman is unprofessional for "shooting" on him with the worker's rights promo. But in fact, the feud actually had a poor build up and was set to be a generic, respectful babyface versus babyface match before Hangman injected some much needed drama into the storyline. It was good for business to do this. Just like it's good for business to defend Punk's pathetic attempt at doing his finisher.

It's hard for me to believe Punk's claim about them constantly communicating up to the point of that promo. Again, Punk didn't give Hangman anything to work with. Contrast their program with Punk/MJF and (although this one was short term) Punk/Eddie. He was way more giving with these guys than he ever was with Page.

Page turned a cold-as-tapwater face-vs-face feud into something with actual intrigue behind it in one promo. Literally only Phil had hurt feelings from it, because the significance of the line went over everyone else's heads until he chimped out about Page.

If Page wanted to hit below the belt, there were countless more inflammatory lines he could've said. Like hammering Punk for those giftcards he, a married man, was handing out to so much of the female talent. Hanger took it easy on the guy, and he still bitched out hard.
