That look he gives while getting off the floor is embarrassment because he thought it'd be DDP or something and it's just some redneck. All of his fan attacks after this were planned and it did pay off with the crowd not letting him escape during a match. It was neat for the time though. It really played into Raven's fanbase's persecution complex too, backing their hero who society was also out to get without the realization that he brought it on himself.
