If you think about it, early 90s Sting was the logical next step of the WWF brand of superhero babyfaces. Maybe that's part of the reason he was so over. He was the only one giving that schtick to the JCP/WCW fans while still fitting in the more realistic style of wrestling they liked

Imagine…IMAGINE…how dimeless Darby Allin or Kane would be without the paint and the mask. It’s adds like 8 points to charisma.
