Not really. Historically heels didn't need to shit on fans to get heat.
Guys like Rick Rude or Mr. Perfect did because they had egotistical "I'm better than you" gimmicks.
You never heard the Four Horseman cutting promos on fans to try and get heat. Heels actually had charisma.
In modern wrestling, most heels are just charisma vacuums that can't get over so they stick them out there and let them get cheap heat.

It's one of the laziest and most predictable things ever. People just don't shift their entire personality on a whim. That's the problem with wrestling these days (back in the old days too). It's so uncreative and just makes it boring when every heel has the same exact copy-pasted personality.

Heels (and faces) should come in a large variety. Some should be cowards, others don't give a shit, others have no problem standing toe to toe with faces, and others just use every advantage because they can.

I'm glad they did this. AEW has been a lesser form of the WCW I enjoyed in middle / high school. JB has been given that damn pillar position for far too long without delivering on the investment. This is his sink or swim moment. I'd rather he crash and burn so they can move off him or he proves us wrong. Either way it's a win / win. MJF and Darby are the only pillars that have proven their worth thus far. Sammy is mid tier gatekeeper at best and the next to be put to the fire. Tay had early potential but squandered it quickly. The two of them could easily be removed and nothing of value lost. Sammy really needs to get his shit together.
