>>10720248You have to be careful to not confuse being successful, or presented as successful, with being charismatic. People naturally want to support winners, but for a predetermined sport like Rasslin, the fans will often reject the "winners" and embrace the mid-carder/jobber/Undertaker-types
Roman's first push was a disaster because he didn't connect with the audiences and rather than play into it and tease a heel turn, WWE instead tried to force the issue. Not until Roman left and came back, and embraced being a maniac, did the crowd finally 'accept' his character arc and presentation
Okada could be a 20-time NJPW AJPW NOAH DG DDT champion, all at the same time, he's not that guy. He doesn't look like a killer, he doesn't look dangerous or unhinged, he doesn't use heel tactics or try to humiliate his opponent (slapping the back of his head, etc).....he wrestles like any other highly-pushed face wrestler. Compare that to prime Sycho Sid, prone to saying goofy shit, but an absolute maniac in the ring whether heel or face.
Shinsuke is one of the biggest "what ifs", if he had spent since his teens really trying to learn and master English. He could be Rey Mysterio-levels of popular instead of being just another (above-average) wrestler.
Grayson Waller is an example of someone that either is or just appears to be hopped up on anti-anxiety drugs and has a mid-wit IQ. I think there's a reason you don't see any viral clips posted of the guy, it's just Bongs/Dingos pushing him as /ourguy/ even though he's just an airtime-filler.
