Vertical suplex is just a normal suplex with a delay, a brainbuster is when the guy drops them high on the head and neck on more or less the spot he was standing in. You'll see the person giving the brainbuster move forward on the drop, whereas a suplex they'll stay planted.

In Japan there's not really a distinction. Vertical suplexes get called brainbusters and they say vertical drop brainbusters for brainbusters.

This is the reason it's become harder to tell the difference. They used to do brainbusters the hard way in the 80s but were phased out in the 90s.
