It was widely agreed he was the guy who worked with the guy who drew the dimes, but was a complete shitter on his own. He caused millions to turn off Raw from 2003-2005.

The revisionism only began when he used NXT to ingratiate himself to IWC marks, and gain relative influence to where he is now, an (admittedly) solid creative head of modern WWE.

He shouldn't have been the guy, but he alone wasn't the reason WWF/E died. Losing Rock and Austin did that.
Pushing Jericho, RVD, Kane, Booker etc as components instead of having them all fall to Triple H might have taken some sting out, but WWE still would have struggled.

The problem was, the whole Evolution (except Randy Orton) weren't really hated but instead, loved by most fans in our country... Randy Orton weren't really liked back then until he won against Mick Foley. Still, it was mixed reaction because everyone see him as a fucking asshole.

TL;DR - Triple H was extremely based. The only reason people hating on him was because he is always getting compared to top babyfaces like The Rock and Austin when he was mostly heel during his whole career.

The former, the top guys were Rock and Austin followed by Jericho third. In terms of crowd overness after them it would be Angle who generated nuclear heat, Edge and Christian along with Chris Benoit, the Dudley Boyz and The Hardy Boyz. If you include Foley he'd be top 4 as well with SCSA/Rock/Y2J. HHH was never over but leeching off bigger stars made him seem important since he buried everyone
