I really just don't get what they are doing. AEW can never just do things the easy or smart way. I don't know how Tony can be a hardcore fan of wrestling and not understand this stuff.
It's really a weird show. You never know who is going to show up or completely disappear. Just when you think various wrestlers or shows are going into various directions, they never get followed up on again. Gravity debuted in the main event a few weeks ago and hasn't been seen since. They officially made Ninja Mack and Willie Mack a team a month or so ago. They teamed together once and that was the end of it.
It's not developmental. They have almost no rookies on there. Even though they have their own platform, money and time to get people all the practice they need, they rarely ever allow people they want to get over like Willow, Skye and others to get promo time. There's no excuse or explanation for it. These people are not going to get better at doing this stuff unless they actually do it.
Like Dark and Elevation, every show has like 10-14 matches on it. 1/3rd of them are squashes and a lot of them are just completely random matches with no build. Nobody gets over because the matches weren't hyped up or built and nothing changes.
The next PPV build is also off to a pretty bad start. Anyone who watched this show weekly would swear the PPV is building to Mark Briscoe or Zack Sabre Jr. vs Samoa Joe. With two weeks to go, they decided that Eddie Kingston (who only appeared on the show twice since Mania Weekend) decided Mark should face Claudio and nobody has any idea who Joe is now facing. Zack hasn't been on the show for 5 weeks, so I doubt it's him. Athena has no opponent. The Lucha Bros have no opponent. Shibata has no opponent. It's really not that hard to make matches and build to them, yet it's rocket science for this brand.
And they want people to pay for this.
