I think the period from 2001 until shortly after Benoit's murder was a down period but not one that couldn't have turned around eventually. And it was still much better than the slop we got in the PG era, and the dimeless eras that followed.

It's not. Kayfabe was still respected back then. Some of the gimmicks were silly but it was presented believably especially at the top of the card.

Wrestling didn't become a gay gymnastics routine after the curtain call. That happened about 10 years later. The curtain call was not televised or on PPV either. It was at a live MSG show and there were photos, but it was also before the internet was everywhere. It was not the kayfabe destroyer some think it was. Also, the curtain call was at the tail end of the New Gen era anyway. It's generally agreed that the best parts of the era were the early years of 93 and 94.

The other major factors (Nikita turning and killing his push by summer 87, the rocket they strapped to Lugar) aren't that important.
