Austin was as hot as the Sun, Vince was molding into his Mr. McMahon character, the Undertaker-Kane feud started building up and the programming overall kept getting better and better.
The gears were starting to finally roll by late 1997 for the WWF

I realized it going through the WWE Network and watching cool sounding WCW matches. Like there's a random ass Antonio Inoki vs. Steven Regal match where they only talk about nWo and even have to cut to show Hogan arriving to the arena. Everything on the show got eaten by that story.

A lot of people pretending to be marks will tell you that it was the “story” that people cared about. Except no one gave a shit about that either. WCW got over because they captured some zeitgeist. It was cool. No one gave a shit who was going to double cross their tag team partner and become the 50th member of the NWO. No one was invested in the story of it, it changed week to week, it was meaningless in the long run. They wanted cool moments and that’s it. Mostly Scott Hall and Nash just doing goofy shit on the mic and threatening people then hitting some power moves. Ric Flair arm dropping his suit jacket and saying he was President of The United States. Hogan Spray painting someone or whipping them with a weight belt. Jericho doing some funny shit. Goldberg getting escorted to the ring by security and breathing pyro smoke then hitting his 5 moves. Sting coming down from the rafters to clear house at the end of the night. The story was completely irrelevant. It was a collection of cool moments that people would stay for when they flipped around with the remote.

Cool moments don’t need justification bud. They just exist. When Scott Hall came out and tossed his toothpick and did his poses and the crowd screamed HEY YO, they didn’t give a fuck that they were about to run a double cross with Kurt Hennig on Mongo or Flair. No one remembers and no one cares. When they replay that clip of Mick Foley getting tossed off the HiaC you know what they never recap? The storyline. No one gives a shit. Times were different then. Yes, there were storylines going on, bloated, ever changing reasons to have a match that made little difference to people flipping channels. You need reasons to have a match, sure, so you have Jericho spill coffee on someone. That’s all it takes. No one is fondly remembering the actual bloated storyline of the NWO or Austin vs McMahon.
