From what's been said he's basically persona non grata in the wrestling scene for being a giant self-important asshole and/or killing that trainee. If you mean fans, it's because most internet smarks got in during NJPW's comeback in the mid/late 2010s. He retired before they started watching and they have no interest in going back and watching old stuff unless Dave tells them to.

They watch Pillars era AJPW because Meltzer jacks off over it. They sure as shit don't go back and watch Tenryu/Jumbo era AJW same way the only joshi they watch is early/mid-'90s Manami Toyota matches.

Most BJW fans are deathmatch fans and BJW's deathmatch division tanked because all of their guys are old so they moved onto FREEDOMS or GCW or ICW:NHB or whatever. Sekimoto doesn't wrestle much outside of BJW so everyone moved on and nobody's there to watch his matches anymore.
