To add, he never really even goes away after Mania 14. If you watch those years back he pops up from time to time every handful of months. Shows he still can't keep sober and disappears for a bit again.

What could they realistically do with Shawn post-WM14? Who would they realistically book him with in 1998? WM14 felt like an actual official end to the New Generation Era and in hindsight I am actually glad he fucked off, because it allowed Rock, Foley, Kane and Triple H to thrive in the main event scene in the coming years.

The returning Sean Waltman probably. They tried to setup a feud even with HBK as commissioner, probably thinking he'd make a "miraculous" recovery sooner than he did
